ARTIFACT

  • a usually simple object (such as a tool or ornament) showing human workmanship or modification as distinguished from a natural object

  • something or someone arising from or associated with an earlier time especially when regarded as no longer appropriate, relevant, or important

  • a product of artificial character (as in a scientific test) due usually to extraneous (such as human) agency

  • an electrocardiographic and electroencephalographic wave that arises from sources other than the heart or brain

  • a defect in an image that appear as a result of the technology and methods used to create and process the image

Artifact is a series of meditative installations exploring Oregon landscapes in sound, light, and time. Our increasing unease due to climate change and the personal observation of shifting seasons is expressed through an emotional connection with the landscape. Experiencing nature while imagining vast ‘geological time’ allows us to realize our role within the place we live, including that we, and the things we make, are also future ‘artifacts.’

Artifact: Transmission is the first installment in this series, a repeating 7-minute long composition, installed as part of the 2019 Portland Winter Light Festival. We envision future iterations as immersive and sculptural installations in a gallery setting, and in the landscapes themselves.
